Counselor Profile
Amanda specializes in highly selective admissions, international students, students interested in liberal arts, social sciences, political science, and international relations, and undecided students.
As an IvyWise counselor, Amanda knows how stressful and demanding the college admissions process can be. She believes that students give themselves the best chance of admission at their top-choice schools when they demonstrate genuine enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity in their applications. To that end, Amanda is committed to helping students find joy in their academic and extracurricular pursuits so that they can present the most honest and compelling versions of themselves to colleges.
An enthusiast for interdisciplinary education, Amanda especially enjoys working with students who have disparate interests and are looking for ways to tie those interests together into cohesive stories. Whether working with a computer scientist fascinated by archaeology or a poet who wants to explore physics, Amanda draws on her training in creative writing to help students make new connections. She uses writing exercises and journaling to encourage her students to push past the usual ideas to find something that truly excites them so that they can begin to tell their own unique stories. Amanda also uses her writing background to help students who struggle with writing.
Amanda is a former Assistant Director of Admission at Brown University and The New School. She graduated from Brown with a bachelor’s degree in history and later went on to study graduate-level English and creative writing at Fordham University and New York University. She has also taught writing at CUNY and NYU and led workshops on the college essay.
While in admissions, Amanda reviewed thousands of applications from students applying to a range of programs, including in the liberal arts, engineering, fine arts, and medicine. In addition to admitting students to traditional undergraduate B.A. and B.S. programs, Amanda also spent a great deal of time evaluating applications to joint-degree programs in the fine arts and medicine, including Brown’s Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME). Amanda enjoys discussing and advising on many different fields of study, and she has in-depth knowledge of the expectations colleges have of students applying to specialized programs.
In her spare time, Amanda enjoys reading, going for long walks around her hometown of New York City, and working with her local mutual aid group to provide clothing and food to people in her community.
