Tutor Profile
Andrea specializes in academic tutoring for English and History.
Andrea’s tutoring journey started in high school. As a high achieving student in English and History, she frequently received last minute requests from classmates for help with their essays and assignments. Andrea continued tutoring when she started school at Columbia University. She worked as a tutor for young students at The Boys’ Club of New York before joining a boutique tutoring agency. In her new role, she worked with high school students around Manhattan, but was most often hired by other Columbia students seeking help in their humanities classes. She guided her high school and university students to achieve As and A+s on their assignments by creating customized learning strategies, offering line edits, and pushing students to strengthen the argumentative and architectural frameworks of their papers. Andrea graduated cum laude from Columbia University with History Departmental Honors (only awarded to the top 10% of history majors) and with a university prize for her senior thesis. That year, only four other students received both distinctions.
Andrea’s signature quality is her ability to empower students to no longer need her. Through her process-oriented approach, Andrea guides students to self-evaluate and identify ways to improve their own work so that they will succeed as thinkers and doers in the classroom and in every aspect of their lives.
Andrea has high expectations for her students coupled with a deeply collaborative and empathetic approach. She believes that writing and analytical skills are muscles that improve with use. With that in mind, she encourages students to exercise those muscles and to take intellectual risks in the supportive environment that tutoring provides. Andrea’s favorite aspect of tutoring is getting to know her individual students’ unique voices and perspectives. She loves to watch their confidence grow as they learn to use their voice in new ways.
